La Palma – a small paradise on earth

La Palma, this beautiful and so attractive tourist destination, is one of the seven Canary Islands and next in our tour.

La Palma is an island dominated by peace and tranquility, famous for the hospitality of its people, with a crystalline sea, expanses of white and thin sand.

It is the highest island in the world and is the base of the most important astrophysical observatory of the Northern hemisphere, on the top of the Roque de los Muchachos.

La Palma is a small but unique island, with only 80,000 inhabitants, and a territory full of lush vegetation. Numerous and spectacular beaches are with well-equipped rooms on islands like Harbor Naos, Los Cancajos with its rocky bed, Faro de Fuencaliente next to the lighthouse, with its waters ochre and turquoise, and Fajana de los French, which is situated in a natural park.

One of the most important tourist centers is Los Llanos, next to the majestic Caldera de Taburiente and the National Park. This huge volcanic crater can be better appreciated seen from scenic spots or can be reached on foot. The fulcrum of La Palma, consisting of cones and volcanic craters, goes to the volcano to the south, Volcan Teneguia, which has caused the last eruption on the island, in 1971. Santa Cruz de la Palma, once a very important port, is currently kept for the more curious tourists, as a reminiscent seaside district. We advise you to visit the church of El Salvador and to climb up along the hill up to the beautiful Plaza Santo Dominigo. Don’t miss the typical cigars of the island made by hand, the prized silk, special, developed embroidery, the baskets, and the local wine.

National Park of the Caldera de Taburiente is all the power of streams and cascade. The thing that will strike you most in this park is its steep landscape, caused by a considerable incline.

The Caldera de Taburiente is a gigantic hollow, among the world’s largest, of erosive origin and wrapped in a circus of peaks from the diameter of less than 8 km, within which the highest peaks of the island rise up: the Roque de los Muchachos, the Pico de la Cruz, and others. The palms of the Caldera de Taburiente are crossed by numerous streams and waterfalls and have really impressive and exciting effect.

Natural Park of the Barranco de los Hombres, Fagundo and Costa de Barlovento is a dizzying beauty. This park at 200 meters above sea level is located in the north of La Palma. The beauty of this natural area is enchanting, with its imposing cliffs of 200 meters in height and its deep precipices. The whole area has an exceptional landscape value and protects its important animal species, some of which are threatened with disappearance.

Enchanting, Santa Cruz de La Palma is a lovely city from the colonial era that preserves many palaces and houses in traditional Canarian architecture. The different churches are also worth seeing, together with the Sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves, the protagonist of a characteristic festival of ancient origins, which celebrates the descent of the patroness on the island. Santa Cruz de la Palma is an area very relaxing, a real oasis of pleasure where you can walk along some of the many trails that meander between the volcanoes and the woodlands.

Los Llanos de Aridane is a modern location to the west of La Palma, rich in coves and  beautiful beaches such as Puerto Naos, Las Monjas and Charco del Verde, that attract thousands of tourists every year. The Church of Nuestra Senora de Los Remedios, which conserves an image of the Madonna of the XVI century, is also very interesting.

San Andres was one of the first colonial villages of La Palma and is currently a popular area because it hosts one of the most ancient churches of the island, San Andres. San Andres is home to part of the area of Los Tilos, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, which we recommend you to visit for the splendor of its landscape and its natural resources.

The gastronomy of La Palma has been founded on two fundamental elements: the fields of sugar cane and wines – guardians of a tradition that dates back to the XVI century. The most curious is that the inhabitants of La Palma are notoriously greedy, so the pastry of the island is the richest of all the Canary Islands. On La Palma the local people are preparing sweets with great care as nowhere in the world.

La Palma is a popular destination for tourists who seek quietness, beauty, and are interested in different cultures.
